The meeting was
held on the request of the Palestinian party. The participants of the meeting
discussed inter-state relations, and their political, economic and humanitarian
components.
Taras Chornovil, First Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, informed the delegates about the political situation in Ukraine and activity of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He called for boosting Ukrainian-Palestinian cooperation in the spheres of economy, culture, public health, tourism, etc. T. Chornovil briefed about establishment of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Deputy Group on the Inter-Parliamentary Liaison with Palestine.
Nabil Shaath attaches great importance to the inter-parliamentary contacts. "The Palestinian party is interested in extending cooperation in the humanitarian and socio-educational sectors, and looks forward to extending the respective contacts," the Head of the Delegation stated. He hopes for further fruitful cooperation between the parliaments and the inter-parliamentary groups of friendship.
The parties focused on the situation concerning the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangement signed by the government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).The Declaration of Principles contains a set of mutually agreed-upon general principles regarding the 5-year interim period of Palestinian self-rule. N. Shaath stressed, "Our country will observe the principles of protection of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Palestine, and will call for supporting recognition of the State of Palestine with the borders of the year 1967."
The participants of the meeting also discussed expectable adoption of the resolution on final recognition of the State of Palestine at the autumn session of the UN General Assembly, and the stand of Ukraine on this issue.
